Danny Watkins showed up as a potential
Eagles pick at 23rd overall in some mock
NFL drafts over the past month or so, but people who thought they knew
Andy Reid quickly dismissed that idea. Watkins, a tackle from
Baylor, is universally projected as an NFL guard, as he acknowledged to reporters minutes after the Eagles made him their first round pick. Watkins is 26 years old, turning 27 in November, after having spent 5 years as a professional firefighter in his native
Kelowna, British Columbia. He never played a down of football until he was 22, when he traveled to the
United States to study in a fire-sciences program at Butte
Junior College in
Chico,
Calif.
